Gabriel Cramer, 1704-1752, became Chair of Mathematics at Geneva in 1734, specialising in algebra and geometry; he introduced Newton's natural philosophy to the university. In the year of this letter, Cramer founded a learned society for Genev…an scientists. Cramer's letter is concerned with latitude and longitude, referring to an inaccurate map of Lake Geneva and the surrounding areas by Buache and variations in his calculations from those made in Paris and London by Nicolas Fatio de Duilliers, a Swiss disciple of Newton - particularly relating to the positioning of the Castle Duillier on the map.
