Añadir al carritoSoft cover. Condición: New. 102 pages : illustrations ; 31 cm. Text In English and Portuguese. Contents: From Lalibela to Nagasaki To the rescue of Prester John Ethiopian crosses Incised decoration furniture from the Azores, 16th/17th century: a group of furniture for the export trade. Manuel Castilho It might seem reckless in a period of "National crisis" and in fact not only national, to undertake the produc- tion of a substantial catalogue. We do believe however that now, more then ever, initiative, daring and perse- verance are essential and that we have to face the future with confidence overcoming to the best of our ability all the difficulties encountered along the way, doing what has to be done. Lalibela for those who never heard that beautiful name uttered, is a fairy tale town in Ethiopia's historic North. It is famous for its rock-hewn churches, where I was pri- vileged to spend Ethiopian Christmas night (January 7th). Lalibela is a living symbol of Christianity's resilience in the land of Prester John for close to two millennia. The catalogue begins with an interesting collection of evocative Ethiopian iron crosses of great beauty, thus the reference to Lalibela and to an episode of Portuguese- Ethiopian history, strangely much better known in Ethiopia than in Portugal, that of the daring young captain D. Cristóvão da Gama. The catalogue includes "An infinity of very fine and curious items", paraphrasing the late 16th century account of Frei João dos Santos describing Chaul on the west coast of India (quoted in the text of item 22). Here our "Very fine and curious" items originate from Ethiopia, Europe, South America, India, Ceylon, China, ending in Japan, thus the mention of the port of Nagasaki, a favoured port for the Nipo-European trade of those days. And a title is only a title, which we hope will be suggestive and awaken the curiosity of all our clients, friends and interested parties.
