Añadir al carritoTall 8vo. xxvii, [1], 298 pp. Photogravure frontisp. of the true Li Hung Chang w/ Lord Salisbury and Lord Curzon. Yellow publisher's cloth, black lettering front cover & spine (minor toning & staining from laid-in clipping, minor shelfwear, slight bumping to couple corners), still VG copy, from the library of Alice Brown Powell (1882-1971), who was responsible for naming the historic "Deepwood" home in Salem, OR, named after a favorite children's book by Albert Bigelow Paine, w/ bookplate for Zera Snow on front pastedown, and manuscript note in Powell's hand laid-in. Early printing of this obscure 20th-century hoax, supposedly written by the real Li Hung Chang, who had actually met former US Secretary of State John Foster in 1897 at a peace conference. Mannix (b. 1873) was a notorious prankster, and promoter of "fake news," often publishing interviews of dead celebrities, purporting himself to be a recovered alcoholic during Prohibition in order to secure lecture fees from Temperance Societies, fabricated atrocity stories during the Spanish-American War, and jailed for check forgery. He eventually ended up as the Astoria, OR newspaper Morning Astorian editor, and managed to bamboozle Houghton Mifflin in to paying him to look for the charlatan writer of the "Memoirs." He used the money to set up a his bogus Pacific Associated Press which reaped him vast profits in the early 1920s. See: Jay Robert Nash, Zanies: The World's Greatest Eccentrics, p. 233-234.
