Not a book, but a 12-inch, 33-1/3 rpm "Long Play" (mono) "New Orthophonic High Fidelity" vinyl jazz record album, RCA Victor LPM 1146, silver-print black label with white dog on top, very-good-plus vinyl but with considerable wear and scratches…around the spindle hole; "very good" jacket is split most of the way back to top edge. The idea here was to have 12 different groups play 12 different arrangements of "Lullaby of Birdland" (all recorded 1954-1955), the most notable of these being Shorty Rogers featuring Andre Previn; Quincy Jones; Charlie Barnet, and Tony Scott. The version of Milt Barnhart and Orchestra was arranged by trumpet player Pete Candoli, who also plays, as does a euphonium player listed here as "Maynard Feruson" (no "g.") Interestingly enough, "Maynard Feruson" (again, no "g") also appears playing trumpet on the version arranged by Billy May for Charlie Barnet and Orchestra. Shorty Rogers' version features Andre Previn on piano, Bud Shank flute, Jimmy Guiffre baritone sax, Joe Mondragon bass, and Shelly Manne on drums. A number of players show up on several of these cuts, including Al Cohn (five times), Jimmy Nottingham (four times), Jack Zoot (three times), Nat Pierce, Milt Hinton, and Billy Byers. First pressing of this intriguing collaboration, inscribed by both Evans and Manne on the front cover; "To Chris, It was nice meeting you, Shelly Manne", "Chris, one of my favourite fans, Bill Evans". The pair were sharing the bill at the Village Vanguard when producer Creed Taylor suggested that they partner up for a recording…and time was booked at Rudy Van Gelder's Englewood Cliffs, NJ.studio,completing the date was Monty Budwig, Manne's regular bassist at the time. The resulting album was commended by Leonard Feather in Down Beat, "Essentially the focus is on Evans, as it should be; yet because of the skill with which he and Manne co-operated, one is often conscious that an important interplay is involved, one that lifts the results far out of the normal piano-with-rhythm class". Cook and Morton award it 3/4*, "Evans seldom responded to a hard-driving drummer, but Manne's canny momentum creates sparks of interplay without disturbing the pianist's equilibrium"; while Allmusic's David Nathan feels that "This was a busman's holiday for Evans, who was freed from the musical parameters he had set for his then current trio. With the result that his playing seemed lighter, freer, more relaxed than it had done for a while. it's a clear that everyone was having a good time and simply enjoying being relieved of their duties with their regular combos". 12-inch vinyl LP (Verve V-8497), in gatefold sleeve, outer laminated, front cover artwork featuring a sculpture by sculptor/photographer Sheldon Machlin, original paper sleeve retained. Uncredited photos of the trio in the studio to the inside cover, Manne's bass drum sporting a front head with the NRA - National Reconstruction Agency - eagle logo and motto "We do our part". Cover a little rubbed, laminate peeling from leading edge on the back panel, interior lightly foxed, inner paper sleeve slightly browned and splitting on the edges, the disc itself showing light surface haze a few minor scuffs, overall very good.

The "Sutton Artist Corporation" contract is an agreement for Earl "Fatha" Hines to perform at Shelly Manne's jazz club in Los Angeles, "Shelly's Manne-Hole." "Earl 'Fatha' Hines to perform" January 15-27, 1974, Monday Off. Three shows nightly between hours of 9pm and 2am." For $2500. Flat guaranteed per week." Signed, "Shelly Ma…nne" and "Earl Hines. By the time Hines was scheduled to perform, Shelly's Manne-Hole had closed. Typed and Printed Document arranging a performance, Signed by both jazz musicians, 4to, New York, NY, Sept. 13, 1973. Shelly Manne opened Shelly's Manne Hole Jazz Club from 1960-73. Manne's goal of sustaining jazz at a time when it was losing popularity ended in late 1973. After his stand alone club had formally closed, he arranged to use a restaurant after hours as a club for jazz performance in its last year, 1973. Due to finances, however, he couldn't sustain this arrangement and the club closed again before Hines was contracted to play in January 1974. Stan Getz was the last act to play at Shelly's Manne-Hole Jazz Club in 1973. Signed.
