Hardcover. Condición: Near Fine condition. Good only dust jacket. Fourth Edition. Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey: Prentice - Hall, Inc., 1972. Near Fine condition in Good only dust jacket (several small chips and tears at the edges). Inner hinges are perfectly sound. No underlining. No highlighting. Appendices. Index. Beneath Professor's Kauzmann's name on the half-title page is his note: "This copy contains corrections." Indeed, on several pages throughout the book, Kauzmann has made brief marginal corrections and/or clarifications to the text. Laid-in is a 5-page outline for Kauzmann's course at Princeton Univerity, CHEMISTRY 305, PHYSICAL CHEMISTRY, for which this book was required reading. [This copy bears the signature stamp (in 5 places) of Professor Walter Kauzmann of Princeton University. Kauzmann's work on the Manhattan Project at Los Alamos in 1944-45 contributed to the successful development of the atomic bomb, nicknamed "Fat Man," which incinerated Nagasaki, and was soon followed by Japan's capitulation. It was in 1948 that Kauzmann's classic review of liquid supercooling and glass formation drew attention to temperatures at which entropies and enthalpies of liquid and crystal phases would appear to become equal. The collection of such "Kauzmann temperatures" produced characteristic curves in the temperature-pressure (T, p) plane. Professor Kauzmann was elected a member of the National Academy of Sciences in 1966]. Bound in the original green cloth. Complete with dust jacket. Fourth Edition. Hardcover. Añadir al carritoA press photo showing an aerial view of the mostly-abandoned construction camp at Hanford, Washington, in 1945. Workers lived in segregated housing in Hanford while they built the Hanford Site nuclear production complex, part of the Manhattan Project. After completion of the Hanford Site, most of the construction housing was abandoned and eventually demolished, replaced by the town of Richland, where the nuclear production workers lived. As the caption puts it, the "'ghost town' has now been replaced by a modern, complete community which provides housing for the families of workers at the plant, which is now engaged in producing the 'atomic bombs.'" Plutonium from Hanford was used in the Trinity test and in the Fat Man dropped on Nagasaki. Hanford released radioactive isotopes into the Columbia River and the air and soil; once decommissioned, it left behind 53 million gallons liquid and 25 million cubic feet solid of radioactive waste. It was put on the National Priorities List in 1988, and is still being remediated. Some buckling at bottom margin; excellent. Photograph measuring 8 ? x 7 inches. With caption, ACME and N.E.A. stamps, manuscript, and later sticker verso.…

Añadir al carritoThe rare first edition of one of the first scientific reports on the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, produced in the immediate aftermath by representatives of the Manhattan Project. The complete set, comprising both the text and photographic volumes. Preceded only by the US Strategic Bombing Survey's report published ten days earlier on June 19th. The Special Manhattan Engineer District Investigating Group - three teams of scientists, medical doctors, and radiation experts led by Leslie Groves's deputy, General Thomas Farrell - arrived in Tokyo on September 1st, 1945. Joined by members of the International Red Cross, Army Medical Corps, and General Douglas McArthur's staff, they made radiation measurements, surveyed infrastructure damage, categorised injuries, and took numerous photographs. 'Significantly, the report concluded that the cities did not possess harmful levels of persistent radioactivity after the explosions' and they 'also noted the observed psychological effects on survivors and demonstrated this feeling of terror by including an eye-witness account in the appendix' ('Surveys of Hiroshima and Nagasaki', The Atomic Heritage Foundation, June 2, 2017). First edition. First volume a 24-leaf booklet, wire-stitched (26.5 x 20 cm); 2 folding maps, second map with a short tear at the lower gutter; original cream wrappers printed in black, thin streak and some scuffs to the upper cover, two small, closed chips to the upper cover, wrappers toned, a very good copy. Second volume a 101-leaf booklet, wire-stitched (26 x 19 cm); 2 folding maps, diagram, 98 illustrations from photographs (1 per page, plus a duplicate of number 57), small tear in map 1 without loss, minor misfolding of map 2, a little uneven toning of the contents; original buff wrappers printed in black, partial toning of the upper cover, lightly rubbed, some dulling and small spots, very good condition.…

Añadir al carritoA certificate issued to Edward R. Driese "for participating in work essential to the production of the Atomic Bomb, thereby contributing to the successful conclusion of World War II". It is dated 6 August 1945, the day the atomic bomb was detonated over Hiroshima, and has the printed signature of the Secretary of War, Henry L. Stimson. Driese was a builder who worked in California; his state contractor's licence is loosely inserted in the manual, of which this is the restricted edition. A public edition was published the following year. It contains information on atomic technology, including the theory of the atom, the construction of the bomb, and the principles of atomic defence. The printed watermark on the certificate depicts a Manhattan Project Service Pin, which was issued in either bronze (as the depiction here) or silver, the latter designating service of over a year. Single sheet of thick paper stock (279 x 214 mm), watermarked with War Office crest. Manual within original morocco leatherette covers, three metal screws. Certificate lightly toned, a handful of marks to outer left edge, else both in very good condition.…
