Condición: Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Good. 1st Edition. xxii+335 pages with illustrations, tables, bibliography and index. Royal octavo (9 1/4" x 6 1/4") bound in original publisher's red cloth with purple gilt lettering to spin in original pictorial jacket. From the library of George Foster. First edition. The Evil Eye is an influential anthropological book edited by Clarence Maloney and published by Columbia University Press in 1976. The book is a compilation of scholarly papers stemming from a landmark symposium on the "evil eye" belief held at the 1972 meeting of the American Anthropological Association. The volume explores the "evil eye"—the widespread belief that a person can cause harm, illness, or misfortune to others simply by looking at them with envy or malice. Maloney's collection provides a comprehensive, cross-cultural examination of how this belief functions across different societies, particularly focusing on: Contributors look at how the belief acts as an emergent property of social interactions, such as interpersonal relationships, local patronage systems, and envy control. It explores how the phenomenon manifests in Circum-Mediterranean cultures, the Middle East, South Asia, and parts of Latin America. The papers detail the various amulets, charms, gestures, and rituals utilized by different cultures to deflect or protect against the "gaze". George McClelland Foster, Jr born in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, on October 9, 1913, died on May 18, 2006, at his home in the hills above the campus of the University of California, Berkeley, where he served as a professor from 1953 to his retirement in 1979, when he became professor emeritus. His contributions to anthropological theory and practice still challenge us; in more than 300 publications, his writings encompass a wide diversity of topics, including acculturation, long-term fieldwork, peasant economies, pottery making, public health, social structure, symbolic systems, technological change, theories of illness and wellness, humoral medicine in Latin America, and worldview. The quantity, quality, and long-term value of his scholarly work led to his election to the National Academy of Sciences in 1976. Virtually all of his major publications have been reprinted and/or translated. Condition: Foster's stamp to front end paper with underlining and marginalia through out. Corners gently bumped. Jacket stained and soiled. edge wear with chips and tears, spine sunned, spine head chipped, corners chipped else good in like jacket.…
