Condición: New. 2005 N&M Press reprint (first pub 1921). SB. xii + 212pp with 10 maps Published Price £18 On 14th January, 1915, a letter from the War Office to the Mayor of Camberwell authorised the recruiting of a brigade of field artillery (156th Brigade R.F.A). The local response was so prompt that further authority was giv…en to raise another brigade in the same neighbourhood, to be designated 162nd Brigade R.F.A. and this was done by mid May. It was then brought to the attention of the WO that a mass of would-be recruits still remained in the Camberwell Borough, enough to complete the whole of the artillery for the 33rd Division, a Kitchener division of the Fourth New Army. The two additional field artillery brigades needed were numbered 166th and 167th (Howitzer), and the divisional ammunition column (33rd D.A.C)was also formed. This book took nearly two years to complete and throughout that time the author maintained the closest collaboration with the official war diaries, personal diaries, letters and experiences of individuals and every sort of reliable information to produce an accurate and complete record of the doings of the batteries in France. An appendix contains a list of the casualties suffered by the divisional artillery (officers by name, other ranks numerically) during the war, another shows all the other divisions supported by 33rd Divisional Artillery, when and where; a third appendix shows the various sectors of the line where the batteries were in action, with dates and official names of the battles in which they were engaged. In the text are twelve tables showing the names of the HQ Staff, brigade commanders, adjutants and battery commanders at various stages of the war.

Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Good. 1st Edition. Published in 1919, this is the scarce first edition of this important study into Trench Fever published immediately after the First World War. This is a Unique Association Copy: and includes an original typed and signed letter by Major William Byam (W. Byam), the primary author of the boo…k. Byam was a major in the Royal Army Medical Corps (R.A.M.C.) who led the British War Office Committee on Trench Fever. The letter is addressed directly to co-author Captain J. H. Churchill written from New End Military Hospital, dated 30th June 1919. New End Military Hospital, Hampstead, N.W.3. was a vital location in medical history. Originally a workhouse infirmary, it was requisitioned during WWI as a military hospital specifically dedicated to researching trench fever and heart conditions affecting soldiers Byam explicitly mentions distributing this "Trench Fever book" via Oxford Press and details transitioning Churchill's medical responsibilities (specifically his "blood counting method") to a successor. The letter reads "Herewith four copies of the Trench Fever book; should you require more I will try and get them out of the Oxford Press for you, but cannot promise to succeed." "I am glad to say I have at last got a successor to take on your job -- quite a keen man named Coles. I have told him about your blood counting method and said that when he found his feet, I would ask you whether you could spare time some day to come and give him a demonstration. I should think in about a week's time he should have learnt sufficient about trench fever to make a start." The book features the official bookplate of the Wellcome Unit for the History of Medicine Library, University of Oxford, cleanly stamped "Withdrawn," confirming its legal deaccession and direct link back to Oxford's historic collections. CONDITON The books covers have some general edge wear rubbing, and a stamp along top page edges (pictured) internally bookplate of the Wellcome History of Medicine Library to front pastedown and a further library label and stamp to front free endpaper (pictured) the letter is tipped in to the reverse of the frontispiece and has a small Wellcome Library stamp to its reverse. Contents in good condition. An exceptional, museum-quality association copy of this landmark World War I medical text. Inscribed by Author(s).

Añadir al carritoLarge softcovers, 29x21cm,216 pages : illustrations, portraits, facsimiles , index, signed & inscribed by the owners by McAleer and Cunningham. Bumped corners, some cover scratches. This memoir chronicles Thomas Arthur Dykes story, from his childhood growing up in country Wangaratta to the working class streets of Abbotsford. At…the age of thirty-two, married with four children, he volunteered to serve his country in its hour of need. An original member of the 23rd Battalion, he travelled with his unit from Broadmeadows to Egypt and in typical Digger style he tells it how it was; surviving the sinking of the troopship 'Southland' and the harsh conditions and constant dangers in the trenches at Lone Pine until he was evacuated wounded only weeks before the campaign was given up. From here he is thrown into the horrors of the Western Front: from Fleurbaix to the Somme, from Ypres to Flers, until he fell victim to the winter of 1916/17 and trench feet. A year out of the line, he returned for the final push of 1918 and was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal for his courage and bravery at Mont St Quentin. But his war wouldn't end for him with the armistice, it just set him up for the struggles he would have to endure in those decades that followed. If you ever wanted to know what a soldier of the AIF had to endure in the First World War - this will tell you.
