Mairin Mitchell (1895-1986) fue una escritora irlandesa que apenas hoy aparece mencionada en los manuales de literatura, a pesar de su prolífica carrera como ensayista, novelista y poeta. En 1937, publicó en Londres Tormenta en España (Storm over Spain), un documento de primer orden para conocer el ambiente que se vivía en nuestro país en los meses previos al estallido de la Guerra Civil. Acompañada de una amiga, Mitchell realizó durante varias semanas en la primavera de 1936 un viaje en tren y autobús por distintas ciudades del sur de España. A lo largo de su recorrido se hospedaron en pensiones, hablaron con la gente de a pie, entraron en cafés y deambularon por caminos; en definitiva, se empaparon de la vida en la calle. El viaje no fue fácil, pues se encontraron frente a frente con huelgas, manifestaciones y escaramuzas entre dos bandos que, en su enfrentamiento por la idea del país que cada uno defendía, avanzaban inexorablemente hacia una resolución violenta de sus diferencias. Mitchell, escritora católica pero con un firme ideario anarquista, supo captar las pulsiones que movían a los españoles de su tiempo y, junto con el relato del viaje, ofrece explicaciones históricas, teorías políticas y análisis de una sociedad que se resquebraja delante de sus ojos.
