A charming guidebook to beauty by Lola Montez (1821-1861), 19th-century global celebrity and one of the most intriguing and notorious women of her time. Born Eliza Gilbert in Ireland, she reinvented herself as Lola Montez, a Spanish dancer who performed the bolero on stages across the world, rose to the title of Countess, dined at the Café de Paris with Balzac and George Sand, nearly caused a revolution in Poland, and brought down the King of Bavaria. Her lovers included Franz Liszt and Alexandre Dumas. Drawn from the author's own experiences as a courtesan and performer, the book offers advice on exercise, diet, skincare, hair, and fashion, with an additional section on the art of fascinating. This copy has a few ink markings by a previous reader in the chapter dedicated to hair loss, and an annotation to the page containing Lord Dupuytren's recipe for his famous pomade, 'which actually overcame the evil of baldness in thousands of cases where it was applied.'
