Born Clara Du Maxet de Pontigny, the daughter of a French gentleman and English mother, as a young woman she lived for some years in France. A very prolific author, she wrote for the English periodical press under the pseudonym Leopold Wray. She translated over 400 songs for musical houses, and "her books of fairy-tales included 140 original tales and 50 retellings of classic fairy tales; and she also wrote 16 handbooks." - wikipedia.
