Libro Original o primera edición
Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very Good. 1st Edition. First edition hardcover with dust jacket, published by Lippincott, 1966. An account of the First Afgan War of 1839, with a focus on the individual soldiers and leaders on both sides. Patrick Macrory served with the British Army during World War II, first in France, then in North Africa, and then in the Middle East. His great-great-uncle was Major Eldred Pottinger, served in the Afgan War, and his story is memorably told here. The dust jacket is intact and has been protected with a clear, removable, Brodart brand cover. It has been price clipped and there is a chip at the spine, and two tears on the back of about two inches each. 352 pages with Sources and Index. The sewn binding is straight and square. The boards have an attractive marbleized pattern, over black cloth covered spine. Boards are flat, with just very minimal wear at the heel of the spine. Corners are straight and not bumped. There is a square of residue from what was most likely an original price sticker on the front paste down and ffep - about 1/2 inch square. No former ownership marks, no writing on the text pages. This is not a former library copy. The edges of the text block have some light tanning from age. Attached is a photo of the copy we have in our inventory.

Hard Cover. Condición: Very Good. No Jacket. 352 pp, large 8vo (9 3/16" H). B&w plates, maps. "In the autumn of 1839, Britain's Army of the Indus marched into the heart of Afghanistan, stormed the reputedly impregnable fortress of Ghazni, and entered Kabul in triumph, thereby scoring considerably in the long-term struggle with Russia for control of Central Asia. For two years the conquerors lived in a fool's paradise; they sent for their wives and children and servants, set up cricket and polo fields. The Afghans bided their time. Then suddenly struck. One of the British authorities was slain, horribly, and the entire band of invaders - troops, families, camp-followers - was compelled to set out for India, through one hundred miles of mountain defiles in the depth of the Afghan winter. Seven days later, one bruised and weary horseman arrived at a British garrison ninety miles away - the only European from that enormous caravan who was not either killed or captured. (This) is a comprehensive and admirable account of the entire war and of the curious, fascinating personalities - British and Afghan - most directly involved in the tragedy." Faint cigarette odor, very light browning to pages, light browning to fore-edge of text block, small bump at top corner of rear board, small crease at top edge of page 161/162.
