Añadir al carritoOriginalhardcover. Condición: Sehr gut. XXI, 297 S. Ein gutes und sauberes Exemplar. - This corpus study traces the history of MILLION in English. It focuses on the shift in word class/function from noun/noun-phrase head (three millions of dollars) to determinative/determiner (three million dollars). A chapter on morphosyntax/semantics probes the natural word class and function of number words and their historical categorization. A composite international diachronic corpus is used to map a broad taxonomy of MILLION phrases, and very-large-scale digital American and British newspaper archives are used to show when and where the syntactic shift took place. The tens of billions of datable words in these sources yield such robust results that key phases in the shift can be traced in unprecedented detail, uncovering surprising patterns in American/British differences and an avoidance strategy in the use of numeral and number-word expressions. Retarding and accelerating factors are treated in separate chapters. ISBN 9783631601563 Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 550.

Añadir al carritoA nice piece of ephemera, associated with a landmark concert in the history of British popular music. 1p, 8vo. Twenty-three-line typed circular, with perforated order slip for tickets at end. In fair condition, lightly aged. Signed 'Donegall' and with autograph address to 'Dear Mac Queen Pope' (i.e. the theatre historian W. P. MacQueen Pope). The circular begins: 'I am writing to you because H. R. H. Princess Elizabeth has graciously consented to attend the Concert to be held by the National Federation of Jazz Organizations, of which I am President, at the Royal Festival Hall, South Bank, on Saturday evening, July 14th. / This Concert would have been in any case a great landmark in British Jazz because it is no small honour to this type of Folk Music to be granted the use of the Royal Festival Hall. But it becomes historical due to Her Royal Highness's intended presence - it is in fact to the best of my knowledge the first time that Royalty has publicly recognised this musical idiom.' He offers boxes to the event 'On behalf of my Kent Army Cadet Force Welfare' (on the letterhead Donegall is listed as one of four members of the 'Welfare Committee'). He concludes: 'Such has been the nation-wide interest in the revival of genuine Jazz Music that I am sure you will not want to miss this unique and royally honoured presentation of the best that Britain has to contribute in this branch of Music.'.
