Americans wondered aloud whether their 76~year~old president, his image battered by revelations in the so~ called Iran~contra affair and by his third major operation since taking office, might be too old and impaired to serve. Ronald Reagan allayed much much of the concern through an effective news conference performance in March. The openness with which he, his spokesmen and doctors had discussed his previous health crises had also reassured many Americans. But observers watched carefully to see what the future would hold and whether such candor about his health would continue. Too often in the past the country has been kept in the dark about the true condition of a seriously ill chief executive, according to Edward MacMahon and Leonard Curry.
