Eichelberger, Eighth Army commander, who knew all that there was to know about the total strategy of an enormous theater, and yet who spent much of the war within range of enemy mortar fire. He fought shoulder to shoulder with his own men within seventy-five feet of the Jap front line at Buna. He landed with his own first wave at Leyte and nearly outran his own 11th Airborne in its miraculous dash for Manila. He even strafed Jap defenders from his own B-17 in the Philippines. A typical day would find him at the front lines in the morning, lunching with MacArthur hundreds of miles away at noon, and back at his headquarters, poring over area maps with his staff, before supper.
