Although many people enjoy birdwatching and identification as a hobby, few realize that this became possible because all bird species were once described and given a scientific name. A species description is considered valid once a unique type spec…imen is identified and used as the reference. For twenty-five different bird species, that type specimen (or specimens) can be found in the Royal Museum for Central Africa (RMCA, Tervuren, Belgium). It concerns an assortment of birds of a very diverse nature. In some cases, ornithological science is still struggling to define a species. Six other birds that have not yet been recognized as 'proper' species by the International Ornithological Union are also discussed here. The type material for these six is also in the RMCA. Three more so-called species were once described by type material, but appear to be colour deviations with plenty of black in the plumage.The Bird Species from the Type Collection emphasizes the importance of the type collection within the scientific collections. Moreover, all the birds discussed are faithfully depicted using detailed illustrations and showing their distribution on a map. The status of the 693 species with confirmed records was investigated carefully, including research on the collections of the Royal Museum for Central Africa. Katanga h…as five endemic bird species: Lippens's ground thrush from the Upemba National Park, greater double-collared sunbird from the Marungu mountains, Upemba masked weaver (along the Lualaba River), Lufira masked weaver (along the Lufira River), and black-lored waxbill (along the Lualaba River). General distribution, presence and status in Katanga, ecology, breeding and migration, notes, and conservation status are discussed for a selection of 248 species that are illustrated in full colour. Habitat diversity is illustrated by 25 photos. Given that the photographs for this book were assembled over only three years by a small team, the authors conclude that Katanga's ornithological biodiversity is still relatively well-preserved.
