Original publisher's beige paper wrappers. Wrappers incorporate decorative red and gray fibers. Dark brown lettering and a small illustration of Abraham Lincoln's bust in side profile on front cover. No lettering on spine. Front colophon: "Designed and Printed by Edward J. Jacob at His Shop in Peoria, Illinois, 1932." 6 1/4" x 9 1/2." Forty-seven pages, complete. A few black-and-white plates, complete. Page are very clean and intact except for the former owner's annotations (in pencil, colored pencil, and ink) on verso of frontispiece and a few other pages. Covers are very clean and intact except for moderate darkening, light to moderate bumping and wear to extremities, and a small "1932" written in ink on front. A Very Good copy. This pamphlet provides further insight into the life and career of Abraham Lincoln as it simultaneously examines the different books he read and traces the chronology of his life from childhood and adulthood and different stages of his career from student to lawyer to politician. Author M. L. Houser describes Lincoln as an avid lifetime reader and learner who remained a devoted student until the very end. Among the biographical information conveyed herein is Lincoln's parents fostering a learning environment for him; Lincoln's first textbook being Dilworth's Spelling Book; Aesop's Fables being among the earliest literature titles he read as a child; his reading of the Bible; his reading of philosophical works such as Thomas Paine's Age of Reason; his much-consulted book of humor called Baldwin's Flush Times of Alabama; and his reading of various books about United States history and law. Houser briefly states in the front that this pamphlet is very similar to another pamphlet (not included herein) printed by Edward J. Jacob, The Books That Lincoln Read, but includes a few additions. Laid in a handwritten note in ink from a former owner that says Macbeth was apparently Lincoln's favorite Shakespeare play. Another leaf is laid in which appears to have been part of a bibliographical list of items in a dealer's catalog. Also laid in is a brown leaf from No. 622 (March 10, 1941) of Lincoln Lore, a bulletin by the Lincoln National Life Foundation. This leaf contains a brief biographical sketch about one of the books that may have greatly influenced Lincoln when he read it as a boy, The Columbian Class Book. Signed by Author(s).…
