This series conveys De Pauws thesis that indigenous Americans were culturally inferior to the rest of the civilized world during the 18th century. The author endeavors to show the inferior character of everything American, especially the inhabitants, and his work evoked considerable controversy. It contains a very curious account of the 'Hermaprhodites de la Floride,' and the custom of 'Circoncision' and 'Infibulation.' De Pauw's notion that American species were biologically inferior to their Old World counterparts was shared by some other enlightenment figures, including Buffon.
