Hardcover. Condición: Good Plus. 'Oeuvres M. De Florian'. In French. 304 pages. 5 1/2 by 3 inches. Six full-page captioned engravings in black-and-white by various artists. Four of six with 1792 at the bottom. Each engraving precedes six separate stories: 1) Selmours, Nouvelle Angloise, 2) Selico, Nouvelle Africaine, 3) Claudine…, Nouvelle Savoyarde, 4) Zulbar, Nouvelle Indienne, 5) Camire, Nouvelle Americaine, 6) Valerie, Nouvelle Italienne. Condition: I've rated this book only Good Plus due to issues with the covers, particularly the front because it is detached. The detachment is clean. I prefer not to do repairs, but this one wouldn't be difficult. You can see the spine in the second photograph. The lettering on the two middle bands is, as you can see (or not see), very difficult to see. I managed it with a magnifying glass. The second from the top reads Oeuvres De Florian. The one below Nouvelles. The rear cover has a small tear in the leather just below its top edge. From a side inside view you can see that there are cracks along parts of the gutter between the rear cover and the rear end paper. However the rear cover feels quite securely bound. There isn't any looseness or give. As I said the rating is brought down by the cover issues. If I were separately rating the interior of the book such rating would be Very Good or possibly Near Fine. The imperfections are few: a tear on the first blank end paper at the juncture so that it can be pulled away from the spine going down 3/4's of the way (so it could certainly become detached, a 1/8 inch tear off the top edge at the juncture on the second blank end paper, a penned name at the top right-hand corner of this same blank end paper, one tiny bit of loss at the bottom corner of one page in the text far away from the print, and the penned words ('Mary Ami Paris 1792') off the top edge of the title page, not reaching the lettering. There is no other writing of any kind to be found anywhere else in the book. There are no markings or attachments. The pages are surprisingly bright and exceptionally clean (perhaps 3-5 small spots over the entirety of the pages, one on the title page). And the illustrations are in very good condition. Despite the aforementioned cover an end paper binding issues, the pages are solidly bound and nicely tight. Scrolling through, I didn't find any tears (the aforementioned small loss was the only one I saw). And I didn't see any creasing or dogeared corners. There is a detached ribbon. And I would mention that the book is square, not slanted. I found only two others of this year and edition for sale, one selling for approximately $200.00 and the other for approximately $300.00. As the weight of this book is light, if it is purchased in Europe or anywhere overseas the $33.00 shipping cost will be reduced to $22.00 by me after the order is received. I would Google Translate the entirety of the above description into French but the software limits how many words/letters can be placed into this window, as my effort to copy and paste has made clear. So, if you are interested, you will have to utilize Google Translate on your end. A fictional account of the life of the second King of Rome, Numa Pompilius, an epic novel. Numa Pompilius was a legendary King, succeeding Romulus after a one year interregnum, and is known as being the peaceful counterpart to Romulus. Pompilius was the second of seven kings who ruled Roman before founding the republic, as told by Roman tradition. He is said to have reigned from 715 to 673. Many of Rome's most important religious and political institutions are attributed to him. These include the Roman Calendar, the office of Pontifex Maximus, Vestal Virgins, the cult of Mars, the cult of Romulus, and the cult of Jupiter. This work is an undisguised imitation of Francois Fenelons 'The Adventures of Telemachus', which was published the century before this work. Written by Jean-Pierre Claris de Florian, a French poet and romance writer, who is best known today for his pretty fables for children. However during his life he was well known for his poetical and pastoral novels. He was a member of the Academie Francaise. Bookplate to the front pastedowns, 'Ernest Thomas'. Les trois pièces les plus amusantes ou curieuses sont : Discours en vers sur les spectacles; les incommodités réciproques du premier jour de l'An (Satire contre les visites); et les réclusières de Vénus (très dirigé contre l'homosexualité). Ex-libris de Eric Bernstein. Exemplaire provenant de la bibliothèque du château de Cannettecourt, ex-Museao armorié gravé de Porchon De Bonval André-Jacques Porchon de Bonval, notaire royal et acquéreur du château de Cannettecourt, seigneur jouissant d'une certaine popularité, fut élu député de la paroisse à l'assemblée du bailliage en 1789. Incarcéré un temps au château de Chantilly, il deviendra le premier maire de la commune de Breuil-le-Vert. Jean-Baptiste Porchon, avocat au Parlement (Armorial d'Hozier, Paris 2, folio 1120). Très belle réunion de pièces très rares pour la plupart.
