Alphonse Davanne is a most important figure in the early history of photography. Born 1824 in Paris, he was a founding member of the Société Française de Photographie, the first photographic society in the world, and subsequently, its vice president and then president. His early collaborations were involved with photolithography, and by 1854, he had mastered that process. His next experiments were on developing a direct positive process. Davanne served as the president of the jury for the photographic section of this International Exhibition. Largely concerned with the history, cameras and equipment, and the latest advances in photomechanical processes, etc. Roosens and Salu No. 3697.

The catalogue consists of 4 parts. [1] Duplessis' treatise on the history of engraving. '' Coup d'Oeil sur l'histoire de la gravure ''. 32 pp. [2] M.A. Davanne's treatise '' La Photographie et les arts graphiques ''. 20 pp + 4 plates [3] The catalogue of the exposition comprising 240 items. 40 pp. [4] A section of publicity and advertisements by French printers and publishers consisting of 133 graphics ( lithographies, colour-or chromolithographs, etchings, woodcuts, photo-engravings etc.). All the pominent French companies are represented ; e.g. Amand Durand , Dalloz , Firmin-Didot, Gillot , Goupil & Co. , Gruel & Engelmann , Hachette , Mame & Fils , Lévy Calmann , Oudin, Quantin , .and 8 pp of music ''la jeune captive''. This catalogue represents a high point in the French art of book illustration and typography at the end of the 19th century. Considering the variety of printing techniques used, and the high standards of printing applied here, it is allmost certain that these 19th c. monuments of printing will never be surpassed.
