The newly-founded republic needed a cultural foundation to prove its right to exist. Literature turned out to be one forum in which the debate over an American national culture was carried out. Using review texts and other specimens of literary criticism from periodicals and other publications, this study provides a synopsis and analysis of the argumentative strategies which both literary nationalists and their opponents in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries employed in the debate over an American national literature. Based on the assumption that nations are "imagined communities, Markus Müller finds that on their campaign to define and establish an American national identity, American cultural leaders encountered the great difficulty of distinguishing the young republic from the former mother country while at the same time using the cultural traditions of England as a basis for an American national culture. Using French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu"s theory of habitus and a number of recent theories of identity, this book shows how American cultural leaders of the Early Republic went about in defining an American national identity and establishing it as a legitimate cultural tradition, as a foundation of the young American republic.…

Die Forschung und Praxis zur kooperativen Konfliktlà sung ist in weiten Teilen von der Vorstellung geleitet, Konfliktpartner handelten grundsätzlich aus eigennützigen Motiven, das heiÃt, sie versuchten ihre eigenen Interessen zu verfolgen und eigene Verluste zu vermeiden. In dieser Arbeit werden eine Reihe von Theorien zu sozialen Konflikten auf diese Grundannahmen hin überprüft. Auf der Basis von Erkenntnissen der empirischen Gerechtigkeitsforschung wird die Untersuchungsfrage entwickelt, welchen Einfluss Eigeninteresse im Vergleich zu Motiven der Gerechtigkeit bei der Erklärung von Konfliktlà sungsbereitschaften hat. Als Untersuchungsgegenstand dient ein lokaler Umweltkonflikt, in dem eine Vielzahl von Anliegen und Interessen miteinander im Konflikt stehen, und der für die Befragten hohe Bedeutsamkeit aufweist. In einer Fragebogenuntersuchung, an der 309 Personen teilnahmen, konnten die Skalen als reliable und valide Messinstrumente bestätigt werden. Die Befunde zeigen, dass die Bereitschaft, gemeinschaftliche, kooperative Là sungen zu suchen, unter den Befragten stark ausgeprägt ist. Jedoch kà nnen Eigeninteressen nur harte Strategien der Konfliktlà sung erklären, das heiÃt, dass die Akzentuierung von eigenen Vor- und Nachteilen der Betroffenen und auch die Neigung, generell seine eigenen Interessen in den Vordergrund zu stellen, mit stärkeren Bereitschaften zum harten Verhandeln einhergehen. Demgegenüber sind kooperative und auch harte Bereitschaften vor allem durch Motive der Verfahrens-, Interaktions- und Verteilungsgerechtigkeit erklärbar. Im Gegensatz zu Annahmen von à konomischen Verhaltenstheorien sind diese Gerechtigkeitsmotive auch nicht auf Eigennutz zurückführbar, sondern stellen eigenständige Handlungsmotive im Konflikt dar. Durch diese Ergebnisse wird verdeutlicht, welche bedeutende Rolle Gerechtigkeit in der kooperativen Konfliktlà sung spielt. Motive der Gerechtigkeit sollten daher stärker als bisher in das Zentrum der Forschung und Modellbildung zu sozialen Konflikten rücken. Dazu werden Ansätze zur weiteren Erforschung der Rolle von Gerechtkeit in sozialen Konflikten vorgeschlagen.…
