Prima edizione in formato di opera singola di questo importante studio di veterinaria del noto medico Luigi Metaxa, nato a Roma nel 1778 da Demetrio, dei conti di Cefalonia e da Maria Ray. Durante i giorni della Repubblica romana rimase a Roma aderendo entusiasticamente fin dapprincipio alla Repubblica e, malgrado l'ancor giovane età, fu subito nominato segretario del Senato. Uomo di grande ingegno fu tra i primi a perorare la causa dell'istituzione di una cattedra specifica di veterinaria che venne fondata a Roma nel 1803 ed offerta allo stesso Metaxa che però, per motivi famigliari, preferì declinare. Ricoprì la cattedra in un secondo tempo dando grande contributo scientifico agli studi epidemiologici veterinari. Questo studio si inserisce proprio in questo filone di ricerche. In esso l'autore studia l'evolversi delle afte epizootiche nel territorio dell'agro romano intorno al 1834 con una descrizione dei vari tipi, ragioni e possibili cure.
