Nato a Siviglia, formatosi all'Università di Salamanca e nominato vescovo di Calahorra y La Calzada nel 1545, Juan Bernal Díaz de Luco fu, insieme a Ignacio de Loyola e Bartolomeo de Las Casas, uno dei principali combattenti della corruzione sociale ed ecclesiale durante l'età delle riforme. Fu il rappresentante più esplicito della Spagna allo storico Concilio di Trento e sostenne il diritto canonico come mezzo per riportare alla sua missione originaria una Chiesa smarrita.
