Very good copy in blue cloth covers wi…th gold lettering on spine, lettering mildly faded. No dust jacket. Fairchild came to California in 1849 and stayed for 6 years, gold mining from Calaveras County to Scott Valley, near the Oregon border. Fairchild later served in the Civil War rising to the rank of brigdier general, served as governor of Wisconsin for three successive terms, and was later in the diplomatic service. George Hambrecht was an educator, lawyer, member of the Wisconsin state assembly, a superintendent of schoold in Grand Rapids, Lincoln scholar and book collector. A note in pencil states that the book was purchased from Hambrecht's estate. Signed by Author.

Annual address on taxes, laws, education, prisons, banks, the militia, immigration, etc. Fairchild was a colonel in the Second Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry Regiment which was part of the legendary Iron Brigade of… the Army of the Potomac. He would lose an arm at Gettysburg and became three-time governor of Wisconsin. Fairchild was also a 49er and took part in the California Gold Rush.
