EARLY REPRINT (1952) of 1949 original National Park Service pamphlet, green pictorial wraps, 9.75 X 9.1 inches, numerous illustations and photos, map, 35pp. Historical Handbook Series #1. O'Keefe #651. Very Good with very light wear; a few light stains on back cover. National Park Service handbook on the Custer Battlefield written by noted Custer historians Edward S. and Evelyn S. Luce. Edward Luce was a Major in the 7th Cavalry, but more importantly served as superintendent of the Custer Battlefield from January 6, 1941 to May 1, 1956. Perhaps no other superintendent was more qualified for the job than Luce who had a deep interest in the battle. Luce's passion for the Custer fight earned him the reputation as an authority on the battle and in 1938 he published, Keogh, Comanche and Custer O'Keefe #1473). His wife, Evelyn Luce, also a gave a large amount of her time in administrative duties at the park. A number of noteworthy achievements and events happened under Luce's leadership. This handbook was available for the public before the museum and visitor center was constructed in 1950-51. A great Custeriana collectible.

Luce was the Custer Battlefield Park Superintendent January 6, 1941 to May 1, 1956. Major Edward S. Luce was an actual veteran of the 7th Cavalry having served from 1907 to 1910, Company B. He worked as Ft. Bliss historian in 1938. In 1941 he became the first National Park Superintendent. Perhaps no other superintendent was more qualified for the job than Luce who had a deep interest in the battle. "During Major Luce's early years in the 7th Cavalry," former park historian Don Rickey, Jr., said, "he spent much time working up the history of the regiment as a troop clerk in regimental headquarters." Luce's passion for the Custer fight earned him the reputation as an authority on the battle and in 1938 he published, Keogh, Comanche and Custer. His wife, Evelyn Luce, also a gave a large amount of her time in administrative duties at the park. Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument preserves the site of the June 25 and 26, 1876, Battle of the Little Bighorn, near Crow Agency, Montana, in the United States. It also serves as a memorial to those who fought in the battle: George Armstrong Custer's 7th Cavalry and a combined Lakota-Northern Cheyenne and Arapaho force. Custer National Cemetery, on the battlefield, is part of the national monument. The site of a related military action led by Marcus Reno and Frederick Benteen is also part of the national monument, but is about 3 miles (4.83 km) southeast of the Little Bighorn battlefield. The Battle of the Little Bighorn, known to the Lakota and other Plains Indians as the Battle of the Greasy Grass and also commonly referred to as Custer's Last Stand, was an armed engagement between combined forces of the Lakota Sioux, Northern Cheyenne, and Arapaho tribes and the 7th Cavalry Regiment of the United States Army. The battle, which resulted in the defeat of U.S. forces, was the most significant action of the Great Sioux War of 1876. It took place on June 25-26, 1876, along the Little Bighorn River in the Crow Indian Reservation in southeastern Montana Territory. The fight was an overwhelming victory for the Lakota, Northern Cheyenne, and Arapaho, who were led by several major war leaders, including Crazy Horse and Chief Gall, and had been inspired by the visions of Sitting Bull. The U.S. 7th Cavalry, a force of 700 men, suffered a major defeat while commanded by Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer (formerly a brevetted major general during the American Civil War). Five of the 7th Cavalry's twelve companies were annihilated and Custer was killed, as were two of his brothers, a nephew, and a brother-in-law. The total U.S. casualty count included 268 dead and 55 severely wounded (six died later from their wounds),: 244 including four Crow Indian scouts and at least two Arikara Indian scouts. Public response to the Great Sioux War varied in the immediate aftermath of the battle. Libbie Custer, Custer's widow, soon worked to burnish her husband's memory, and during the following decades Custer and his troops came to be considered iconic, even heroic, figures in American history. The battle, and Custer's actions in particular, have been studied extensively by historians.
