From the Foreword: HERE are sixty-four songs with Spanish texts, designed primarily for high school and college students of Spanish in the United States, but prepared with the hope that they may also be acceptable to music lovers whose native tongue is… Spanish, as well as to a large and increasing group of people who, though not trained in the Spanish language, are, nevertheless, interested in Spanish culture. In these days when neighbors are trying to cross the barriers of language on the way to a better understanding, music offers an excellent bridge. Indeed, music is the proverbial remover of obstacles to understanding, providing as it does a means of universal communication. A large number of songs come from continental Spain and were chosen both because of their inherent charm and because of their influence on the music of the Western Hemisphere. These songs have certain interesting characteristics, such as being built on multiples of five, instead of four, measures; lacking correspondence between word and musical stress; beginning in the minor key and ending in the major; ending on the dominant, instead of on the tonic; revealing a strong Oriental influence; stressing moods and attitudes of different provinces, and much besides -- factors which serve only to add to the interest of the songs themselves. For serious students of the Spanish language and literature, this section may well be the most interesting. There follows, however, a group of songs of the New World -- a reflection of the mother country, plus one or more new elements. There has been an attempt to represent as many countries as possible; but some are more accessible than others, and distances in South America are very great. The supplement shows that Spanish peoples enjoy many of the songs of other nations. Every song in this section is here because it has been adapted for use with a Spanish text by nationals of Latin countries. An Appendix provides notes on the songs and also a brief synopsis, in English, of the Spanish text. This latter device will enable those less familiar with Spanish to understand the mood of each song. Most of the songs are in one or two parts, since that is the prevalent mode of singing them. Melodies might make very charming quartet arrangements, but they will generally lose their essential character in the process. For this reason, some of the harmonies are of the slenderest, with the intention of retaining the original flavor of the melodies. Because of differences in versification, it is sometimes necessary to add (or subtract) an occasional note in making parallel translations of English and Spanish. There seems to be no other remedy. 105 pages.
