He started in college, first collecting local floras of New England, eventually expanding to collect all of science. He left about 12,000 books to Brown University, his alma mater. [. . . ] In the preface to [the book being offered here] he wrote 'For half a century I have tried, within my means, to find the great books of science .' but 'It is the secondary and tertiary books that give color to collecting and makes it fun.'
