Bookplate (institutional?) partially peeled from front pastedown. Text block is firmly staple-bound but rusted staples have pulled away from endpapers leaving entire text block detached from boards. Ink si…gnature of W.C. Morse at top right corner of front free endpaper. Errata slip tipped-in at title page; another slender errata slip tipped-in at page 68. Department stamp with green wax pencil marking on title page too. Large color foldout map titled "Geological Map of Mississippi" dated 1915 laid-in at rear endpapers. With several b/w photographs inset amongst text. Prominent academic and geologist William Clifford Morse (1874-1962) taught at Mississippi State University from 1918-1934 and at University of Mississippi from 1934-1958 and also served as Director of the Mississippi Geological Survey.

A good+ copy of an uncommon publication. No publishing date is specified but OCLC and the Library of Congress online catalog cite 1912. Features title leaf plus ten pages of text in which geologist E.N. Lowe proposes aiding flood control for the Mississippi River by diverting the Tennessee River down the Tombigbee River via Yellow Creek and Mackey Creek in Tishomingo County in the northeastern corner of Mississippi. In essence this is an early proposal for what eventually would become the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway. Lowe's plan is not mentioned in John Barry's RISING TIDE which, of course, discusses Mississippi River flood control at length.
