Na, whan ye fast, pit oil on your heid an wash your face, sae at ye mayna be seen bi men tae be fastin, but onlie bi God' (p. 11) -- `William Laughton Lorimer (1885-1867) is almost the last and certainly the greatest of our translators. All the translators of the modern period played their part in the efforts to break free from the influence of English translations and to find a fitting form of Scots for biblical translation. In every respect Lorimer took their work a step further and his translation represents the culminating achievement and pinnacle of this endeavour. His parents, his two elder brothers and his elder sister all demonstrated a strong interest in languages and Lorimer followed their lead, spending most of his life teaching Greek in the universities at St Andrews and Dundee and becoming Professor of Greek at St Andrews in 1953.'
