From the introduction: "My aim has been to produce an exhaustive bibliography of books and serial publications in Great Britain and Ireland, on the history and organisation of horse racing and thoroughbred breeding in these countries from earliest recorded publication in the 16th century up to the end of 1973, which would be both a systematic classification of knowledge in this field as well as a complete, yet simple guide to the literature. I have therefore designed a classification scheme for horse racing and thoroughbred breeding books which serves as the organised arrangement. To this I have appended a name and tide index and a chronological index of works of historical significanceThe bibliography consists of a classified catalogue with a name and title index, a subject index and a chronological list of works, arranged by main class, which were published up to 1850. Thereafter the literature becomes more prolific. The classified section of the bibliography contains full information. Each entry consists of the heading, the title as it appears on the title page, imprint, collation, series and annotation, or, in the case of a work not found, the source of the information as to its existence which were principally acknowledged authorities.
