Schietmotten zijn vlinderachtige insecten met behaarde vleugels. De larven leven in het water en staan bekend als kokerjuffers. Het zijn belangrijke indicatoren voor de ecologische kwaliteit van het water. Schietmotten worden 's nachts aangetrokken door licht en verschijnen dan op de lakens van nachtvlinderonderzoekers. Deze publicatie bevat de eerste determinatietabel voor de schietmotten van de Benelux. De tabel valt uiteen in 21 deeltabellen, grotendeels gebaseerd op de zogenaamde sporenformule. Het aantal sporen per poot is namelijk essentieel voor de determinatie. De tabellen worden geïllustreerd met talloze originele foto's en lijntekeningen. Uit de Benelux zijn 232 soorten schietmotten bekend: 182 in Nederland, 215 in België en 189 in Luxemburg. Verder zijn er 11 soorten uit de aangrenzende gebieden opgenomen. In de soortbesprekingen wort de kennis per soort samengevat, inclusief notities over de habitat en zeldzaamheid. Van veel soorten is een veldfoto opgenomen. Hopelijk zal de uitgave de studie van deze interessante insecten stimuleren en ook bijdragen aan het behoud van hun leefgebieden. Caddisflies are butterfly-like insects with hairy wings. The larvae live in the water and they are important indicators for the ecological quality of the water. Caddisflies are attracted by light at night. This publication contains the first identification table for Trichoptera in the Benelux. The table is divided into 21 sub-tables, largely based on the so-called trace formula. The number of spores per leg is essential for identification. The tables are illustrated with numerous original photographs and line drawings. 232 species of Trichoptera are known from the Benelux: 182 in the Netherlands, 215 in Belgium and 189 in Luxembourg. Furthermore, 11 species from the adjacent areas have been included. In the species reviews, knowledge is summarized per species, including notes on habitat and rarity.
