There is a spine lean and the page edges are browned. The pages are slightly browned with quite heavy browning to the half-title page and the final page of the text. Small number to the title page and there are a few small stains through the book but the pages are otherwise generally unmarked. No jacket. First printing.

Other than their debut novel (1938), "Black" was used in subsequent titles. (Their English publisher employed the pen-name portmanteau "Conyth.") Unlike many mystery novels of Golden Age Detection, their sleuths, whether a ballerina, a nurse, an heiresses, et al., are always female; the male protagonists serve as mere foils.
