Añadir al carritoCondición: Very Good. No Jacket. xvi, 362 pp, 1 blank leaf; 6 text figures; publisher's ads (12 pp) for first 50 volumes in the International Library of Psychology, Philosophy and Scientific Method, and listing 26 volumes in preparation. Original cloth. Light splotches on front cover that can be seen at one angle but are almost invisible at another angle (see photos). Front and rear flyleaves browned. Very Good. This copy does NOT have any library markings. First Edition in English of "Theoretische Biologie" (published in 1920). There are two imprints, this one with London publisher first and New York publisher second. The American edition has the order of the two publishers reversed. Since the book was printed in England (stated on the verso of the title page), the imprint offered here is the First Edition in English. COPY OF HANS WERNER LISSMANN (1909-1995), with his signature "H. W. Lissmann" on front flyleaf (see photo). Hans Lissmann is best known today as discoverer of the electric sense of fishes. A fine association between Lissmann and his doctoral adviser Jakob von Uexküll at the Hamburg Institute for Environmental Research. Quoting from the Biographical Memoir of Hans Lissmann as a Fellow of the Royal Society, by McNeill Alexander: "The boys did well at school and went on to the University of Hamburg where Hans read zoology, starting in 1928. . . . Hans developed great admiration for Professor J. von Uexküll, Director of the Institut für Umweltforschung. He undertook his research in the Institute, on the behaviour of Siamese fighting fishes, and obtained his doctorate in 1932. The most interesting and influential part of this work was his analysis of the interaction between fighting males, in which he made innovative use of mirrors and models to show how the early stages of a fight are released by the opponent's size and shape, but the final stage depends also on the opponent's behaviour" (Biographical Memoirs of Fellows of the Royal Society, Vol. 42, 1996, pp. 235-245). ABOUT THE TRANSLATOR: The English translation was by "D. L. MacKinnon". This is stated only on the verso of the title page (see photo). Most know nothing about "D. L. MacKinnon" and probably assume the translator was a male who did translations and nothing else. In fact D. L. MacKinnon was Doris Livingstone MacKinnon who had a long career as a biologist. Quoting from the Oxford D.N.B.: "Mackinnon graduated BSc from Aberdeen University in 1906, at a time when few women were studying science. She gained a special distinction in botany and geology, and submitted her thesis 'Studies on protozoa' for the degree of DSc in 1914. She was awarded an honorary LLD by the university in 1943. After graduation Mackinnon received a Carnegie scholarship and spent a year in the laboratory of Richard Hertwig in Munich. She also spent a few months at the biological station at Roscoff in Brittany (where she worked on protozoological research with M. F. Vlès) and at the Quick Laboratory in Cambridge--under the supervision of Professor G. H. F. Nuttall. In 1908 Mackinnon returned to Aberdeen as personal assistant to Professor J. Arthur Thomson at the university; she collaborated with him on several papers. In 1909 she moved to Dundee as assistant to Professor D'Arcy W. Thompson; she was promoted to lecturer in 1916. It was at University College, Dundee, that Mackinnon gained her reputation as a brilliant lecturer and protozoologist specializing in the parasites of insects. . . . Her early training in German enabled her to produce in 1926 a translation of Jacob von Uexküll's Theoretische Biologie. . . ." NOTE ABOUT OTHER COPIES (July 2026): The book was published with a dust jacket, which is NOT present on this copy. The two copies with a dust jacket are the two most expensive ($659 and $1200). The other three copies range from $350-$440. As far as can be told from the descriptions, none of the five copies has a provenance of importance, unlike the copy offered here.
