Jan Theodoor Jozef Linnig was een begenadigd schilder en prentmaker uit een Antwerpse kunstenaarsfamilie. In 1868 maakte hij de illustraties voor dit Historisch album der stad Antwerpen, samengesteld door Frans Hendrik Mertens. In het album vinden we bekende stadsgezichten: het Vleeshuis, het Steen en de Beurs. Maar Linnig gunt ons ook een blik op stukjes Antwerpen die inmiddels zijn verdwenen. De monumentale waterpomp op de Veemarkt bijvoorbeeld. De ruïnes van de Sint-Walburgiskerk, gesloopt in 1818. En de ingang van de Sint-Michielsabdij, die tijdens de Belgische Revolutie volledig werd verwoest. Van een rij houten gevels aan de Stoelstraat kunt u er één nog altijd gaan bewonderen. U vindt hem vandaag op nummer 11. ---- Jan Theodoor Jozef Linnig était un peintre et un graveur de talent issu d'une famille d'artistes anversois. En 1868, il a réalisé les illustrations de l'album historique de la ville d'Anvers, compilé par Frans Hendrik Mertens. Dans cet album, on retrouve des paysages urbains bien connus : la Vleeshuis, le Steen et la Bourse. Mais Linnig nous donne aussi un aperçu de morceaux d'Anvers aujourd'hui disparus. La pompe à eau monumentale du Veemarkt, par exemple. Les ruines de l'église Saint Walburgis, démolie en 1818. Et l'entrée de l'abbaye Saint-Michel, complètement détruite pendant la Révolution belge.
