Hardcover. Condición: Good. No Jacket. HALF WAY WITH ROOSEVELT, Ernest K. Lindley, hardcover, stated revised edition, 1937. BOOK CONDITION: good. The text block is in very good condition, with no tears, dogears, or marks. Pages are age-toned as are the endpapers. No bookplate or signature of prior owner. Not a library book or re…mainder. The blue boards are in good condition (light bumping of spine and a few corners). 8 ¼ x 5 ¾, 427 pages, 22 ounces. XX [From the back cover of dust jacket of a separate copy] "Why HALF WAY WITH ROOSEVELT? Not a campaign document, this book is an objective history of the first three Roosevelt years, written with striking impartiality by one of the most brilliant political observers of the day. Its title holds a double meaning which readers will discover for themselves. It revises and carries forward the history begun in the author's excellent book of three years ago, The Roosevelt Revolution: First Phase, and in his 1931 biography: Franklin D. Roosevelt: A Career in Progressive Democracy. It gives the most penetrating portrait ever published of Roosevelt's own personality. It offers a clear and orderly picture of the complicated functions of government and the Roosevelt way of handling them. It explains the gold policy and tells how it influenced recovery; shows what the TVA and other power projects mean for the future; why the CCC has had popular approval. It places the blame for the failure of the NRA; points out the weaknesses in the social-security law; stresses the administration's failure to cope with the Supreme Court majority. It reports favorably on the work-relief program, the attitude toward labor, the AAA and its sequel; it criticizes the tax program, the housing policy, the handling of direct relief, in terms that will surprise Republicans and Democrats alike. It points out the startling fact that the national debt has actually been made lighter since 1932. It openly discusses the danger of war and the influences in the Roosevelt Administration working for and against embroilment abroad. It takes up the common charges of graft, spoils, bureaucracy, dictatorship, radicalism, and deals with them realistically. It estimates the strength and weakness of Wallace, Farley, Hull, Perkins, Morgenthau, Tugwell, Hopkins, Ickes, and many others. It compares America's recent history with that of other democracies today. It analyzes the basic philosophy of the New Deal, shows to what extent it has been practiced, weighs it in relation to the needs of a democracy under capitalism. It shows where we are, and where we are likely to go, regardless of the outcome of the 1936 election. In short, it is a vastly informative book for the open-minded reader who is tired of campaign ranting. [From the dust jacket flaps] A star political observer for one of the leading Republican newspapers (New York Herald Tribune), Mr. Lindley covered Roosevelt from the time he went to Albany as Governor of New York until the summer of 1936, when his paper assigned him to Governor Landon. [Lindley] has been a personal admirer of Roosevelt and an intimate of the New Dealers in Washington. His long and sympathetic association with Roosevelt balanced by his liberal Republican connections and his newspaper position help to explain the impartial detachment maintained so remarkably in this book.".

XX [About the author from his Washington Post obituary] Ernest K. Lindley, a noted Washington correspondent for many years and then an official of the State Department. Mr. Lindley was in the vanguard of the wave of journalists attracted to Washington to cover the New Deal of President Franklin D. Roosevelt. He had covered Roosevelt when he was governor of New York for the old New York Herald Tribune and the newspaper sent him [to Washington] when Roosevelt was elected President. [Lindley] soon established a reputation among his colleagues and members of Congress and the administration as the leading authority in the press corps on Roosevelt and his policies. In 1924, Mr. Lindley had joined the staff of The New York World as a reporter and political writer. He moved to The Herald Tribune in 1931 when the world ceased publication. Lindley and his wife Elizabeth were friends with Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt; Lindley was chosen as the authorized Roosevelt historian and wrote the first biography of him. [About the publisher] Blue Ribbon Books was established in 1930 by a consortium of publishers as a reprint publisher to compete with Grosset & Dunlap. Titles were drawn from the back catalog of the publishers involved in the enterprise.

Hard Cover. Condición: Very Good. No Dust Jacket. 1st Edition. First Printing. Publisher's full black cloth, silver lettering on spine and cover, t.e.g. (blue), fore-edge deckle. Ernest K. Lindley (1899-1979) was a noted Washington correspondent for many years and then an official of the State Department. Mr. Lindley was in the…vanguard of the wave of journalists attracted to Washington to cover the New Deal of President Franklin D. Rossevelt. He covered Roosevelt when he was governor of New York for the old New York Herald Tribune and the newspaper sent him to Washington when Roosevelt was elected President. He established a reputation among his colleagues and members of Congress and the administration as the leading authority in the press corps on Roosevelt and his policies. He was the author of several books on the subject. In 1937, Mr. Lindley left The Herald Tribune to become the Washington bureau chief of Newsweek magazine, which was organized that year. A year later, he joined The Washington Post as a reporter and columnist. Mr. Lindley remained on The Post until 1943 and on Newsweek until 1961. He then became a special assistant to Secretary of State Dean Rusk and a member of the State Department's Policy Planning Council. He remained at State until 1969, when he received the department's Superior Service Award. During World War Ii, Mr. Lindley organized a group of veteran reporters that met frequently with Gen. George C. Marshall, the Army chief of staff, and Administrator Ernest J. King, the chief of naval operations, and other high officials for briefings on sensitive military and diplomatic matters. The famous "Lindley rule," which still is invoked at times by officials in their dealings with the press, was established by Lindley during his interviews with military leaders during World War II. Under the rule, information gleaned from officials may be published, but without attribution to any source. Reporters often use such vague attributions as "government officials" or "unimpeachable sources" to lend authenticity to their stories. Under the Lindley rule," even these advices are prohibited. The reporter must state the information on his own authority. . Former owner's bookplate on ffep, small closed tear at head of spine, covers very lightly soiled, corners lightly worn, otherwise unmarked, tight, square, and clean. . 8vo 8" - 9" tall. x, 426 pp.
