Errichtet wurden die Kapellen zu unterschiedlichen Zeiten und aus vielen Ursachen heraus. Man erbaute sie beispielsweise in Epochen der Not, etwa in Pest- und Kriegszeiten, bei Viehseuchen oder nach verheerenden Unwettern. Oft entstanden diese Oasen der Ruhe und Frömmigkeit aus rein persönlichen Motiven und in der Folge von Schicksalsschlägen.
