Soft cover. Condición: Good to Very Good. First Edition By This Publisher.. 253 pages *** Interior illustrations by Frank C. Pape; "most famous writer who isn't anymore", but who is now garnering a cult following - may be the only author of an octodecology, an 18-volume related work, that being his Biography of the Life of Manuel [by correct counting, there are twenty volumes.] The first entry in this lifework was Cabell's famous Jurgen, and the second was this fetching fantasy, Figures of Earth, essentially a prequel in which Manuel, a swineherd, rises to become Count Manuel of Poictesme. An enjoyable fantasy with emotional sensitivity - and insensitivity - but one in which Cabell's tongue-in cheek humor abounds, as does his penchant for anagram, hidden poetry and portmanteau. Frank C. Pape's dreamlike illustrations deserve a review of their own." >> Cover creasing; Bump to lower right corner of book. Size: 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall. Mike Foreman Illustrator. (ilustrador). Soft cover. Condición: GOOD+. PBO (Paperback Original) True First Ed. ISBN = 345-02279-3-095. 305 pages.Goodread notes = " The novel chronicles the fall from power of the Caliph Vathek, who renounces Islam and engages with his mother, Carathis, in a series of licentious and deplorable activities designed to gain him supernatural powers. At the end of the novel, instead of attaining these powers, Vathek descends into a hell ruled by the demon Eblis where he is doomed to wander endlessly and speechlessly. Vathek, the ninth caliph of the Abassides, ascended to the throne at an early age. He is a majestic figure, terrible in anger (one glance of his flashing eye can make "the wretch on whom it was fixed instantly [fall] backwards and sometimes [expire]"), and addicted to the pleasures of the flesh. He is intensely thirsty for knowledge and often invites scholars to converse with him. If he fails to convince the scholar of his points of view, he attempts a bribe; if this does not work, he sends the scholar to prison. To better study astronomy, he builds an observation tower with 11,000 steps." >> Heavy Cover creasing & indents; Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. Ray Cruz - Wraparound Painted Cover (ilustrador).
