September 2001 in Los Angeles, Californien) war ein U.S.-amerikanischer Neurophysiologe. Bekannt wurde Lilly zunächst durch seine Forschungsarbeiten über Delfine und deren Sprache. Später versuchte er - hauptsächlich im Selbstversuch - mit Hilfe des Floating, LSD und anderer Drogen wie Ketamin menschliche Bewusstseinsebenen zu erkunden. Als Erklärungsmodell benutzt er dabei den sogenannten menschlichen Biocomputer. Während Lilly bis in die 1970er Jahre anerkannte seriöse wissenschaftliche Forschung betrieb, die sich im Grenzbereich zwischen Biochemie, Neurophysiologie, Verhaltensphysiologie und Psychologie bewegte, wurden seine Publikationen zunehmend esoterischer. Lillys Beiträge zur Biologie und dem Verhalten der Delfine sind unbestreitbar von wissenschaftlicher Bedeutung. Seine spätere Arbeit wird von der wissenschaftlichen Gemeinschaft mit erheblicher Skepsis betrachtet, hat aber in der New-Age-Szene Beachtung gefunden. Lilly absolvierte das California Institute of Technology und wurde 1942 an der University of Pennsylvania promoviert. Er initiierte und leitete Forschungsprojekte u.a. auf den Gebieten der Biophysik und Neurophysiologie, wobei sein Hauptinteresse der Frage nach der Struktur des menschlichen Bewusstseins galt.
