James William Abert (1820-1897) was an American explorer, soldier, bird collector and artist who joined the Corps of Topographical Engineers in 1843. He took part in several expeditions into the west, including Fremont's third exploring expedition, which reached Bent's Fort on the 2nd of August, 1845.
