Guglielmo Libri fut certainement le plus grand voleur de livres et de manuscrits précieux du XIXe siècle ; il pilla notamment la bibliothèque Inguimbertine de Carpentras, la bibliothèque Royale, la bibliothèque de l'Arsenal, etc. Devant les soupçons qui pesaient sur lui, il réussit à s'enfuir en Angleterre où il réalisa pour une véritable fortune les trésors qu'il avait dérobés. Dans cette réponse, Libri, qui avait été prévenu dès la fin de février de la découverte du rapport et avait aussitôt rejoint l'Angleterre, nie en bloc et en détail l'accusation de vol.
