Añadir al carritoBrit. Med. J., 1955/1. - London, March 12, 1955, kl.-8°, 11 pp., self wrappers. Rare Offprint! *) Read to the Section of Neurology at the Annual Meeting of the British Medical Association, Glasgow, 1954. "During the last ten years there have been considerable advances in the diagnosis and treatment of brain abscess. Of overridin…g importance has been the introduction of the antibiotics, but superior methods of location, and experience in the methods of treatment available, have all contributed to the improved results. Thus in the Department of Neurological Surgery, Oxford, thé mortality has fallen steadily (Table I). The earlier series Table I.-Brain Abscess, 1938-54 Years No. of Cases Deaths 1938-43 - 48 - 22 (46%) (before penicillin) 1944-48 - 62 - 18 (29%) 1950-54 - 36 - 7 (19,4%) have been described previously (Pennybacker, 1951), and in the present paper the results over the last four years (1950-4) are recorded. During this period there were 36 cases with 7 deaths, a mortality of 19.4%. Concerning these seven deaths it should be noted that three of the patients had been admitted at a late stage, when the abscess had already burst into the ventricle and ventriculitis was established, and one other patient had had multiple abscesses." Lewin "Walpole Sinclair Lewin (1915-1980) "After resident appointments at UCH he proceeded to FRCS in 1940 and at the London MS in 1942. Joining the RAMC he was posted to the Head Injuries Military Hospital at St Hugh's College, Oxford, where he came under the influence of Sir Hugh Cairns. He subsequently served in the Middle East, achieving the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in charge of a surgical division. In due course he was to follow Cairns as consultant neurosurgeon to the Army. His outstanding ability and inexhaustible energy had been spotted by Cairns and at the end of the war he was appointed assistant surgeon and lecturer to the Nuffield Department of Neurosurgery at the Radcliffe Infirmary in Oxford. In 1955 he became consultant neurosurgeon to Addenbrooke's Hospital, Cambridge, and was tireless in helping to set up the new medical school. He enjoyed an international reputation as a neurosurgeon but it was in the field of head injuries that his contributions will be best remembered. " Royal College of Surgeons of England.
