Compì i primi studi con Cristaudda, Cuppari, Aloisio e Pisapia, ma fu il Galluppi che sviluppò il suo ingegno. Dopo varie traversie comincio a pubblicare alcuni ''Opuscoli filosofici'' nel 1836, che ebbero il plauso del Galluppi, del Tedeschi e della stampa. Poi pubblicò la ''Dissertazione sul Sensismo'' e la ''Filosofia calunniata di materialismo'' che furono accolte molto bene dalla stampa periodica e lodate dal Galluppi, dal Mamiani a Parigi e dal Gioberti a Bruxelles.Nel 1847 venne nominato professore sostituto alla Cattedra di Diritto filosofico nel Seminario arcivescovile del Monastero dei Cistercensi nella Casa dei Teatini. Nel 1848 pubblicò l'''Elogio alla Libertà'' dedicata a Ruggiero Settimo e fu Presidente del Circolo politico ''La Tribuna del Popolo''. Fece la campagna della guerra dell'Indipendenza nel 1848 e fu decorato della Medaglia commemorativa. Il ''Poligrafo'' di Palermo lodò i pensieri del Catara pubblicando alcuni dei suoi dialoghi nel 1872, anno di pubblicazione della seconda edizione della sia ''Introduzione alla filosofia morale ed al diritto razionale'', opera molto lodata da filosofi italiani e stranieri. Nel 1865 fu nominato professore ordinario di filosofia del diritto all'università di Messina, ed infine preside della facoltà giuridica dell'Università di Messina. Cfr. Mira vol.
