Lestock, 1679-1748, vents his anger and frustration at his treatment by the Admiralty by going public with his log of events, together with the subsequent correspondence, carefully annotated. He was court martialed for his part in defeat to the Spanish Fleet, but acquitted and promoted to Admiral.

Admiral Matthews was in command of the English fleet, chased a spanish squadron under José Navarro into Toulon. The French joined the battle and Matthews was handicapped as Lestock and the rest of the fleet failed to support him.
