Hardcover. Condición: VG+. Estado de la sobrecubierta: VG. 1st. The first attempt to fly across the Tasman Sea, from Australia to New Zealand, was in early 1928 when Moncrieff and Hood left Sydney to cross the 1200 miles of often stormy ocean, bound for a racecourse near the NZ capital, Wellington. They never arrived and their single engined aircraft has never been found, although there were reports it reached NZ. In September 1928 Kingsford Smith and his crew of three, in the Southern Cross, successfully made the crossing, landing near Christchurch. Their trip, in a three engined aircraft, was not without its drama and dangers. In his history of pioneering flights between the two countries, up to the post-WWII years, Leslie Jillett follows the solo flights by men and women, some by famous names in aviation, to the first commercial passenger services by flying boat and a number of records set for the crossing. 199 pages including appendix with details of flights covered, index, 26 b/w photos including frontis, map in text, e/paper maps. Blue hard covers with gilt spine titles VG+ with hint wear spine extremities, lower front corner, ink name in margin above FFEP map, text block otherwise excellent. Pictorial DJ VG with small section missing spine top, few chips one short tear at top rear flap fold. Photos, Maps (ilustrador). …
