Paladini, come molti altri pari a lui, a seguito della sconfitta delle istanze generate dalla prima guerra d'indipendenza, dalle 5 giornate di Milano e dalla Repubblica Romana (avvenimenti ai quali partecipo'), visse molti anni in africa occidentale, Algeri, Tunisi, Biskra, luoghi nei quali esercito' decine di lavori e professioni, dal verniciatore di carrozze al medico (pur essendo laureato in legge). Le sue memorie partono da quando, giovane studente di legge a Pavia, volle visitare il Piemonte, allora sotto il Regno di Sardegna (1843), e offre una gaudente descrizione del suo viaggio nell'Oltrepo Pavese: Casteggio, Broni, Stradella, Bobbio ecc. fino ad essere arrestato dai gendarmi piemontesi a causa della mancanza di passaporto. A questi racconti giovanili, l'autore alterna poi ampie digressioni relative alle sue mille avventure africane ma anche ai rustici costumi degli studenti di Pavia, alle vicende della prima guerra d'indipendenza quando, dopo le 5 giornate, fu con il corpo dei volontari in Tirolo e poi a Malta, una volta fuggito da Roma dopo il fallimento della Repubblica.
