Soft cover. Condición: Very Good. 1st Edition. Itchy Planet Number 1 (Spring 1988) - Leonard Rifas (Editor) / Various Contributors - Fantagraphics Books - Perfect Condition Rare first issue of the short-lived quarterly alternative comics magazine Itchy Planet, published by Fantagraphics Books (Westlake Village, CA) in Spring 1988. Subtitled "Stories • Humor • Information" and themed around "Crisis on Finite Earth," this debut number examines the nuclear predicament, nuclear winter hypothesis, and related late-Cold War anxieties through a mix of comics, essays, and surveys. Cover price $2.25 / $3.40 CAN. 32 pages, saddle-stapled, semi-glossy colour cover with black-and-white interiors. Dimensions approximately 16.5 × 26 cm. Editor and Key Contributors Edited by Leonard Rifas, the noted comics historian, educator, and creator of educational/political comics (including work under the EduComics imprint). Rifas contributes the major illustrated essay "Nuclear Winter: A History of the Nuclear Winter Hypothesis," tracing the scientific and political response to the theory from the early 1980s. Larry Gonick (creator of the acclaimed Cartoon History of the Universe series) provides the energetic multi-page piece "Pa·ra·dox," a satirical examination of nuclear deterrence, mutually assured destruction, and the logical absurdities of Cold War strategy, rendered in his characteristic dense, witty cartoon style. Jerry Gold contributes the prose piece "Love and Boundaries, or, How I Learned That I Could Push the Button," a reflective first-person account of participating in a military war-game simulation. Additional work by Norman Dog, Michael Dougan, and others, including comics and illustrations that blend humour with serious political commentary. Cover illustration by David Suter with the notable addition of classic Alice imagery by Sir John Tenniel (the celebrated 19th-century illustrator of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass). Contents Highlights Editorial introducing Itchy Planet as a forum for cartoonists to examine the multifaceted world crisis. "Pa·ra·dox" by Larry Gonick. "Nuclear Winter" by Leonard Rifas. "Love and Boundaries…" by Jerry Gold. "The Nuclear Family" by Norman Dog and Larry Gonick. Survey of AIDS-related comics. Reviews and additional short pieces. Coming-issue notes for subsequent numbers on the politics of comic books and electoral comics. The magazine is a distinctive artefact of late-1980s alternative comics culture, combining the satirical tradition of underground and independent cartooning with explicit political engagement on nuclear issues. It belongs to the same era and publisher orbit as other Fantagraphics titles that elevated non-mainstream comics. Condition: Very good This copy is in very good condition. The colour cover is bright and unmarked, with no creases, tears, edge wear, or colour fading. The saddle staples are tight and rust-free. All interior pages are crisp and complete, with no foxing, writing, stamps, or reading wear. Corners are sharp. An excellent copy of a scarce first issue from an important independent publisher, ideal for collectors of alternative comics, political cartooning, Cold War visual culture, or the work of Larry Gonick and Leonard Rifas. Larry Gonick, Leonard Rifas, Jerry Gold, Norman Dog, Michael Dougan, David Suter, Sir John Tenniel, et al (ilustrador).…

Paperback. Condición: New. Comic books have presented fictional and fact-based stories of the Korean War, as it was being fought and afterward. Comparing these comics with events that inspired them offers a deeper understanding of the comics industry, America's "forgotten war," and the anti-comics movement, championed by psychiatrist Fredric Wertham, who criticized their brutalization of the imagination. Comics--both newsstand offerings and government propaganda--used fictions to justify the unpopular war as necessary and moral. This book examines the dramatization of events and issues, including the war's origins, germ warfare, brainwashing, Cold War espionage, the nuclear threat, African Americans in the military, mistreatment of POWs, and atrocities.…
