Lene Berg (*1965) lebt und arbeitet in Oslo and Stockholm. Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 1800 Gr.-8°. Orig.-Karton in Orig.-Plastikhülle.

Couverture souple. Condición: Comme neuf. Gentlemen & Arseholes is a reprint of an inscribed first issue of the cultural journal Encounter from 1953, along with a series of supplementary materials that are inserted between the original pages. Lene Berg collected these additions over a long period from books, newspapers, private…albums, conversations, and so on. They thus vary in their character and form. What they all have in common is that they describe aspects of that which, for various reasons, was never mentioned in Encounter, nor in connection with any of the other undertakings of the sponsor and publisher, the Congress for Cultural Freedom (1950-1967). The additions change the interpretation of the original and perhaps make it wilt somewhat. They can be read alone, in relation to the original texts, from beginning to end, from the middle, or in a higgledy-piggledy way; they do not comprise an unambiguous narrative, but are rather a series of tracks, puzzle pieces and circumstantial evidence ¬ but of what? A liberal conspiracy, a successful state-sponsored cultural effort carried out by a powerful intelligence agency, that created many dilemmas, and perhaps resulted in the very existence of the world we now live in, or perhaps it made no difference whatsoever. The questions Lene Berg raises are: How can we assess the consequences of art, literature, philosophy, and research? And under what conditions can they be described as free and independent.

Pages are mildly yellowed, book is clean with unmarked text, free of inscriptions and stamps, firmly bound. A touch of scuffing to board…s edges; faint fingermarks on the front. Issued without a dust jacket. -- Published on the occasion of an exhibition held at the Centrum Sztuki Wspolczesnej Zamek Ujazdowski in the Spring of 2005. -- Contents: Preface; Personal Synopsis; Anachronism; Jenny & Charles; Unique; For Example; Darwin's Error; Waterton's Negro; Human Images; Delight; Absurdity; Letter from Poland; Science and Culture; High and Low; Improbable; Zeitgeist; Museum of Evolution; Logic; Experts; Ignoble Beings; Utility; Afterword; Annotations and Footnotes; Bibliography -- Many people were surprised, one night during the Autumn of 2005, when a man with a white beard appeared on the façade of the Palace of Culture and Science in Warsaw. Most were able to place the voice, but not many recognized the face. What is Karl Marx? Or God the Father? Or Santa Claus? A very few realized that it was a portrait of Charles Darwin, but what was he doing there? And why was he humming 'What a Wonderful World'? And why at the Palace of Culture and Science? And why now, on a typical Thursday in October? The purpose of this book is not to answer these questions. nor many other questions that might arise, but it most definitely has something to do with the man on the façade.
