Añadir al carritoFirst edition (not stated). 128 pages. Hardcover: H 31.25cm x L 23.25cm. White cloth (Kingskraft boards per publisher/binder crest at rear board's bottom right); some soiling to boards as well as some staining to rear board, spine heel bumped. A few spots of light soiling and staining to interior pages which, overall, remain cle…an. Binding is firm. A very good- copy. Publisher's imprint discreetly placed at bottom right corner of page 128. No publishing date provided but endpaper maps delineate the Bennington's 1955 and 1956 cruises so presumably published in late 1956 or, more likely, sometime in early to mid-1957. Features some color illustrations and numerous b/w photographs throughout of personnel, officers, etc. including sections for ports of call at Trinidad, Montevideo, Valparaiso, San Diego, Hawaii, Kyoto, Philippines, Hong Kong, and Okinawa. Apparently an uncommon if not scarce cruise book as OCLC does not cite any copies among member libraries; OCLC does cite Bennington cruisebooks for 1953-1954, 1957 ("The Log: A Pictorial Record of a Far East Cruise From October 1956 Through May 1957"), and 1958 ("Deploy!") with the latter two published in Tokyo. The [U.S.] Naval History and Heritage Command website no longer has their full Navy cruisebook bibliography posted online but they do have a list of ships and their corresponding cruisebooks in their collection and, for the USS Bennington, they cite cruisebooks (but not their titles) for 1953, 1954, 1957, 1958, 1958a, 1961, 1964, 1965, 1967, 1968, and 1969.

Chemnitz's 'Neues systematisches Conchylien-Cabinet', Nuremberg 1769-88 The most beautifully produced German iconography on shells, portraying marine shells from all over the world including those from Cook's voyage into the Pacific. Friederich Wilhelm Martini, a Hamburg…physician, conceived the idea of publishing the first large-scale encyclopaedia of shells illustrated with hand-coloured plates. His ambition was to describe and portray every kind of shell known, an ambition virtually impossible to fulfil, as others have discovered since. No sooner was the third volume of the 'Neues Systematisches Conchylien-Cabinet' in print that its author died, in 1778. Publication was continued by Johann Hieronymus Chemnitz, a Danish clergyman who, between 1779 and 1795, added a further eight volumes" (Dance, Shells p. 24). The portrayed shells come from famous 'wunderkammer' collections of Kings and nobility, as well as wealthy merchants, such as the museum of Lorenz Spengler, cabinet maker of the King of Denmark. Also included were the very extensive collections of Martini, in the first 3 volumes, and of Chemnitz in the other volumes.
