Butterfield states in his preface, "The annotations begin with Leith's introduction to savage life, and end with his final return to civilization; beyond this point, the narrative gives a vivid portrayal of hardships and privations such as were incident to the early settlement of the West.". The first edition is extremely rare with OCLC noting but 2 institutional copies; this reprint here offered is not often seen on the commercial market [e.g., at the time of cataloguing, RBH shows 1997 as the most recent].
