Ami d'enfance de Savinien de Cyrano de Bergerac (1619-1655). Ils étudièrent ensemble, s'engagèrent aux Cadets de Gascogne et quittèrent l'armée en même temps. Après la mort de Cyrano, Le Bret, devenu chanoine, publia la première édition de "L'Autre Monde, ou les estats & empires de la lune", en 1657, avec une préface biographique de l'auteur. En 1705, il devint archidiacre de la cathédrale de Montauban . Édition : Nouvelle édition revue et annotée d'après les documens originaux, par MM. l'abbé Marcellin et Gabriel Ruck ; [introduction par Mary-Lafon] . L'édition originale date de 1668 . "HENRY LE BRET : Le prévôt de la cathédrale de Montauban a mené l'histoire de la ville jusqu'en 1669 : il l'a divisée en deux parties, description et affaires ecclésiastiques, sommaire des guerres de religion. Bien informé de tous les détails, il ne cache pas que l'animosité entre catholiques et protestants subsiste même après la fin des guerres : à cet égard, il est quelque peu partial et tend à rejeter la responsabilité des désordres sur les seuls réformés. Très rare plaquette au sujet d'un procès qui opposa l'évêque de Montauban aux consuls de la ville. Le "Catalogue Collectif de France" mentionne un unique exemplaire à la bibliothèque de Montauban, et précise que l'ouvrage est absent de l'ouvrage "Histoire de l'imprimerie et de la librairie à Montauban" d'Émerand Forestié. Selon Madeleine Alcover, l'auteur de ce factum serait Henry Le Bret (Paris, 1618-Montauban, 1710), connu pour être un ami d'enfance de Cyrano de Bergerac, dont il publia "Les États et Empires de la lune" à titre posthume. Avocat avant d'entrer dans les ordres, il était devenu l'homme de loi de l'évêque de Montauban Pierre de Bertier (Toulouse, 1606-Montauban, 1674), s'occupant de ses divers procès. Henry Le Bret évoqua en effet le litige dont il est ici question dans un texte publié en 1701 sous le titre "Récit de ce qu'a esté et de ce qu'est présentement Montauban". L'affaire concernait la propriété de six forges de la juridiction de Moutauban, dont l'évêque avait été dépossédé lors de la Réforme. Elle entraîna un second procès pour l'asservissement de deux cantons, sujet du présent factum. Cet exemplaire fut relié par Paul Charles Allô, relieur parisien installé rue Dauphine.
