Also half-title and final leaf have color illustrations and are essentially color plates, thus arguably bringing the total number of color plates to 52. Four smaller illustrations, in color, on title and text pages. James Harold Doolittle, better known as Jimmy Doolittle (1896-1993) was an American war hero and aviator best known for the Doolittle Raid, an air raid on the primary islands of Japan just a few months after Pearl Harbor, but also before and after achieved a good number of aviation firsts. He also was a general in the U.S. military. This book celebrates Doolittle's experiences primarily during the Second World War, mostly through vivid pictures but with accompanying text that explains the visual depictions with a breezy, easy-to-read manner. Col. Greening (1914-1957), who was the primary force behind this hagiography, was himself a pilot and participated in the Japan Raid under Doolittle, among other heroic wartime exploits.
